App Store CMS & data tooling for Shell.
Building a content management system and 50+ APIs to replace a manually-managed App Store backend — cutting operational overhead by 80%.
The challenge
Shell's internal App Store relied on manual processes for adding, updating, and tagging applications — including media uploads and label management. Each change meant operations work, and changes at scale were untenable. The team needed a proper CMS plus a programmatic data layer.
The approach
- 50+ APIs across the stack. Built using Django REST Framework and Python — covering user management, keyword-based search with bucket-wise sorting, and content operations.
- CMS for the App Store. Designed an interface that empowered content owners to add, modify, and remove application components — including media uploads and predefined label tagging — without engineering involvement.
- Performance-aware data layer. Implemented local caching of database entries to CSV files using Pandas, reducing data retrieval times by 50%+.
- Bulk data tooling. Django management commands to upload 200+ application datasets at once — enabling tag updates, workflow adjustments, and local data downloads at scale.
- Containerised deployment. Orchestrated deployments on VMs and Kubernetes clusters using Git pipelines, achieving 95%+ deployment success rate.
The outcome
shipped
manual ops work
success rate
Content owners could ship updates themselves, ops teams stopped being a bottleneck, and the platform handled scale that the previous manual workflow simply couldn't.
